Circlar

Circlar is a graphic design studio specializing in visual identity applied to the web and publishing. Co-founded in 2024 by Laurent Mbaah and Théo Hennequin, this creative space based in Brussels is at the intersection of theoretical and graphic research projects. Mainly active in the cultural field, we are interested in projects with social and committed dynamics.

Laurent Mbaah (Simlo) is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic and digital designer. His work is described by a maximalist research inspired by Afrofuturism and Internet cultures, combined with a precise approach of visual narration. Within Circlar he instills his curiosity of shapes and his creativity to propose singular graphic systems, while putting into practice an advanced mastery of digital tools and web development. Tabula Rasa unfolds in three parts, three Arkanas, each represented by a different tarot card.

𝓪𝓻𝓰𝓸𝓼 shuffles its tarot deck and draws The Fool, a card that represents transformation, adventures, opportunities and new beginnings. We therefore invoke a tabula rasa - a moment to rethink our institution with fresh eyes by examining the past, reconsidering the present and imagining new possibilities for the future.

Tabula Rasa unfolds in three parts, three Arkanas that are represented by a tarot card. The first Arkana is The Tower that is associated with transformation and awakening, a moment of revelation that clears away outdated structures. This card signifies events that can feel shocking or even chaotic, but these experiences ultimately lead to new insights, growth and a stronger foundation.

The second Arkana is under the spell of The High Priestess that is linked with hidden knowledge and which calls to 'go deep'. This card will guide us in exploring and revealing the gaps within the argos’ collection. The High Priestess draws wisdom from inner reflections and unseen realms to uncover hidden truths.

The third Arkana is influenced by The Magician card, which symbolises manifestation, resourcefulness, power, and the ability to make things happen through skill and intention. This third and final Arkana is dedicated to audiovisual artists and the current opportunities and challenges they are faced with. Drawing from those questions, we will look at how art institutions engage with artists today and imagine alternative possibilities to create a nurturing and thriving artistic ecosystem. The Magician embodies the ability to transform divine ideas into earthly forms.
