Circlar

Circlar is a graphic design studio specializing in visual identity applied to the web and publishing. Co-founded in 2024 by Laurent Mbaah and Théo Hennequin, this creative space based in Brussels is at the intersection of theoretical and graphic research projects. Mainly active in the cultural field, we are interested in projects with social and committed dynamics.

Laurent Mbaah (Simlo) is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic and digital designer. His work is described by a maximalist research inspired by Afrofuturism and Internet cultures, combined with a precise approach of visual narration. Within Circlar he instills his curiosity of shapes and his creativity to propose singular graphic systems, while putting into practice an advanced mastery of digital tools and web development. Théo Hennequin is a graphic designer inspired by Swiss graphic design as well as contemporary and experimental movements, experimenting with typographic compositions and layering. In doing so, he has developed a singular aesthetic and theoretical repertoire. He also works on research projects based on the world of football and supporterism, focusing on the off-field aspect and the underbelly of the sport.

Édition 2024

If Afro-diasporic discourses, for so long on the margins, are now centralised, sacralised and celebrated, it is through the emergence and resilience of those who carry them. This edition celebrates the advent, but above all the redefinition, of these two notions, both symbolic and artistic, as well as identity-related.

How can we characterise, and ultimately enhance, the resilience of these practices and the people behind them? Isn't what emerges here an extension of what has been gleaned elsewhere, and vice versa?

By reconsidering emergence as a capacity to share, we will at the same time be looking at resilience as a capacity to preserve.

Special thanks to 3D artist and brilliant intern Dharmeart for her help in creating the visual identity for Issue 9.

As this eighth edition of the festival gets underway, it is focusing on a central theme: the networked dynamics and relationships that shape our shared realities, through which essential questions emerge: How do we build a solid, committed community? How do we nurture this community, ensuring both individual and collective well-being? At the heart of the concept of community care lies knowledge, its transmission and the sharing that drives it. This process of sharing is not limited to the transmission of ideas, but also encompasses the conservation and evolution of this knowledge, thus ensuring its continuity. Africa is/in the Future aims to celebrate African artistic expression, while also exploring how this expression shapes the connections, visions and aspirations of the community. By focusing on networked dynamics and interpersonal connections, the festival highlights the power of collaboration and sharing in building a vibrant and inclusive collective future. In this eighth edition, we invite you into a dynamic where networks of relationships weave themselves into a web, where ideas travel freely and where kindness towards ourselves and others nourishes the very fabric of the community.
